I wanted to thank everyone for coming to the DAY of SERVICE yesterday. I know I was conflicted about how to spend the day--January 20th--but this fit the bill. We had about 35 people who helped out with the various projects. This was the first year we have done such a project and it seemed successful to ME!
Our day was sponsored by the AAUW (American Association of University Women) Crystal Lake Area Branch. AAUW is a national organization (AAUW.org) whose mission is advancing equity for women and girls. We operate on sort of a school year. No meetings in the summer and starting back up in September. There is a state convention in the spring. Yes, there are dues. Please let me know if you would be interested in joining us. I might add that there are interest groups--Great Decision Discussions, Book Clubs, Bridge and so on. Always something to do! Our president, Nancy Middleton came up with this idea and I thank her for it.
Thanks to Pam Miller and her sister Debbie for being our rescue animal contact, to my quilting and church friends--Linnea, CaroLynn, Linnea, and Susan--who were so helpful, to the church for letting us use the space, and to Chaille, Theresa, Lori, Sandy and the dedicated hygiene kit group who are there every month. Next Bookfriends/AAUW Work Day is February 11.
Some of my family was there (Yeah), some of you donated needed items, some of you could not manage to make the day of the event.....thanks to all who contributed in spirit.
I think if we continue to focus on local needs and concerns, help out where we can and interact peacefully with each other, we will be OKAY. Not great but okay.
As my girlfriends know, we now move on to something else. As my mother would say, "It keeps Carol out of the bars!".
Talk soon. CAH

The AAUW (American Association of University Women) Crystal Lake Area Branch invites you to join a morning of community service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 20, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church. This year marks the 31st anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. Day being recognized as a “day of service.”
Participants will engage in six different service projects aimed at supporting various groups in need, including homebound individuals, people experiencing homelessness, rescue animals, and more. Projects include assembling hygiene kits for girls in Africa, tying quilts for Lutheran World Relief, and other meaningful activities.
No specific skills are required to participate, and all are welcome. If you would like to help or donate supplies, please contact Carol Heisler at carolheisler@gmail.com. For groups larger than four, kindly notify Carol in advance to ensure sufficient supplies are available.
Thank you for joining us in making a difference on this special day of service!
