On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Bethany Lutheran Church hosted a special Las Posadas celebration at 7:00 p.m. The bilingual service, held in English and Spanish, brought together people to honor Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter in Bethlehem.
Music from St. Andrew Lutheran Church in West Chicago filled the church with joy and unity. The literal meaning of "Las Posadas" is "lodging" or "shelter." Pastor Rafael Malpica Padilla delivered a powerful sermon, reflecting on the modern-day significance of Las Posadas.
He encouraged attendees to explore the ELCA’s AMMPARO Migrant Ministry, which advocates for basic human rights, promotes just and humane policies, and addresses the migrant crisis. He also recommended reading Solito, a memoir by Javier Zamora about his nearly impossible migration journey from El Salvador to the United States as a 9-year-old boy.
Following the service, participants enjoyed food, fellowship, and fun. The evening concluded with the breaking of a piñata.. The event beautifully celebrated community, faith, and the spirit of Advent.
