Dear Beloved Community at Bethany,

After speaking with Pastor Cathy last Wednesday night, I sat with Bethany’s staff Thursday afternoon to talk through some things for the week ahead. Though I haven’t walked in your shoes, I have walked in my own. I know the heartache that comes when a congregation grieves, collectively, for their pastor and family.

There may be many things that feel unsure in the days ahead. But there are some things I know for sure, and I want to share them with you today:

  • I believe God’s grace will keep showing up in ways we cannot imagine or did not count on. This will be true for the Daharsh family and also for your congregation.
  • Bethany’s staff, council, and rostered leaders who attend Bethany feel called and ready to serve you in the days and weeks ahead. They are spirit filled and God is working through them. I am most grateful. Our synod staff will walk alongside of them offering support as well.
  • You are signs of God’s grace in this moment, and that will be apparent in your showing up and care for one another. You will be informed by your council and staff what is needed as the weeks unfold.
  • You may find yourself wrestling with questions of faith—questions with no clear answers, such as “why do bad things happen to good people.” These are signs of deep spiritual work, work the Spirit welcomes. Your questions are welcome at Bethany, too—it’s the community God gave you to work out your faith. I do hope you find spaces and people you trust to walk this journey.
  • Your pastor and her family have a loving and supportive network around them. Their gratitude for your outpouring of prayers and mail is immense.

I look forward to seeing you Friday afternoon at the visitation and funeral, and again on Sunday at worship. Until then, I will hold you in my prayers.

Peace,

Pastor Jen Beamsley
