Alleluia, Christ is Risen!
Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia!
Our Easter celebration continues. The joy of Jesus’ resurrection broke through on Easter Sunday and the season of Easter will continue for seven weeks until Pentecost. In a larger sense, the Easter celebration never ends. Our lives are changed because Jesus is alive again and because he lives, we know that we, too, have life everlasting.
Today, we join Cleopas and the other, unnamed disciple walking along the road to Emmaus. They are talking about all that has happened. All of a sudden, Jesus is with them, but they don’t recognize him. What does he do? He invites them to tell the story. So, they tell him all the things he already knows about what has happened. They tell him about his death and resurrection.
All these years later, Jesus invites us to tell the story, too. The disciples on the road to Emmaus didn’t have all the answers. In fact, they were confused about what was happening and what it all meant. Yet they could still tell the story—and they did. We don’t need to wait until we have all the answers before we begin telling the story of Jesus (especially since we will never have all the answers). Jesus invites us to share the story of faith—wherever we are, whatever we know, whoever we are. Jesus invites you to tell the story.
The story becomes new for us each week as we gather in worship to share in word and sacrament. When did the disciples on the road to Emmaus recognize Jesus? In the breaking of the bread. We continue to break and share the bread each week as we worship and Jesus is revealed to us.
As we continue in this Easter season, may we experience Jesus’ presence. Then, seeing Jesus, may we tell the story.
In Jesus’ name,
Pastor John
