The doors were locked.
That’s where we find the disciples in our Gospel text this week. They are huddled, afraid, uncertain, and bracing themselves against the world. Into that locked room, the risen Christ comes and stands among them and says, “Peace be with you.”
There are days when we want to lock the doors. In a time when truth is distorted and dignity is denied, when so many forces seem bent on fear and control, it can be tempting to retreat. To protect ourselves, to stay quiet, to wait it out.
But resurrection doesn’t let us stay behind closed doors. Here in the early days of Easter, we are reminded that life refuses to be contained. What once seemed dormant begins to rise again. This is resurrection life.
Resurrection doesn’t just comfort, it commissions. Jesus breathes on the disciples and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” He sends them out. Their fear does not disqualify them; it becomes the very place where courage is born.
It reminds me how across traditions of culture and faith, we see similar movements. Breath that gives life and trust that leads to action. In the Jewish tradition, the breath of God is what brings life in the beginning, a sacred gift shared by all creation. From that gift flows a deep commitment to tikkun olam, or the repair of the world. This is a calling to participate in healing, justice, and restoration. Reminding us that in all times, the work of mending what is torn continues.
This is the beginning of our Easter season theme: Empowered Witness. Because resurrection is not only something we celebrate, it is something we live. Resurrection calls us into courageous witness, into community that tells the truth, into Spirit-empowered mission that proclaims life in the face of all that deals death.
We will not always feel ready. And yet, Christ meets them there. Greeting our doubt with presence and our fear with peace. So take heart: the doors may be locked, but Christ is not locked out.
