This Sunday we’ll be sitting with the story of Moses’ call from Exodus. God’s people groan enslavement and oppression, and their cries rise up to heaven. God hears, God remembers, God sees—and God acts. But the way God chooses to act is surprising: through an ordinary shepherd on the far side of the wilderness, who insists he isn’t up to the task.
Moses doubts his voice, fears he’ll stumble over words, and wonders if anyone will listen. Yet God responds not with a pep talk, but with a promise: “I will be with you.” Even more, God’s very name—I Am Who I Am—is revealed as presence itself, a living, liberating force moving in history through fragile human hands.
These days, it’s easy to echo Moses’ hesitations. Who are we to speak of justice? Who are we to imagine a future shaped by love? And yet, the story reminds us that God does not wait for perfect leaders or polished plans. God moves through people willing to listen, to show up, and to trust that grace is enough.
As a church rooted in grace, we are called to be moved by love—not by fear, cynicism, or despair. Like Moses, we may stumble, but we do not go alone. God is with us. God equips us with companions for the journey. And God’s name still pulses with promise: I Am with you.
One way we live this out together is by joining in acts of love for our wider community. On Sunday, September 28 at 2 PM, we’ll walk in the annual CROP Walk. This is a chance to stand together against hunger, to walk in solidarity with neighbors near and far, and to represent our congregation in the public square. Lace up your walking shoes, bring a friend, and let’s show up as a visible sign of God’s love in action.
This week, may we lean into God’s presence as we discern what it means to be church here and now—and may we take steps, quite literally, to embody love in the world.
Peace,
Pastor Katie
